- El presidente de EE.UU., Donald Trump, dijo hoy que tiene "muchas ganas" de reunirse con el papa Francisco, un día después de que la Casa Blanca anunciara que contactará al Vaticano para tratar de programar un encuentro con el pontífice durante la visita a Italia en mayo del mandatario estadounidense.

"Vamos a contactar al Vaticano para ver si pueden acomodar una audiencia con el Papa" durante la visita de Trump a Italia para participar en la cumbre del G7 prevista para fines de mayo, aseguró el portavoz de la Casa Blanca, Sean Spicer, durante su conferencia de prensa diaria.

El director de la oficina de prensa del Vaticano, Greg Burke, ha confirmado la disponibilidad del Vaticano para recibir al presidente estadounidense, Donald Trump, en declaraciones recogidas por los medios de comunicación italianos, después de que la administración estadounidense manifestara la intención de solicitar una audiencia con el Pontífice.

"Sería un honor para nosotros tener una audiencia con Su Santidad", añadió, citado por la agencia de noticias EFE.

Cabe recordar que en febrero del año pasado, Trump y el papa Francisco trabaron un inusual duelo en las redes sociales, después de que el entonces candidato presidencial propuso la construcción de un muro en la frontera entre Estados Unidos y México. El Vaticano aseguró después que el Papa no quiso hacer un "ataque personal ni una indicación del voto". El Papa mantiene criterios diferentes a Trump en temas como la lucha contra el cambio climático y el tratamiento adecuado que deben recibir los refugiados.

Trump visitará Italia para asistir en la ciudad siciliana de Taormina a la cumbre del G7, que juntará a los jefes de Estado y de Gobierno del Grupo de los Siete países más industrializados del mundo: Italia, Alemania, Francia, el Reino Unido, Estados Unidos, Japón y Canadá.
