Stiff headwinds for GOP on health care, tax reform

Donald Trump has made the debate about the Affordable Care Act all about Donald Trump, and healthcare for millions of Americans hangs in the balance.

It took Republicans nearly two months to cajole their own representatives into voting for the party's plan to gut Obamacare, but getting the bill passed in the Senate could be far more challenging.

If an agreement can not be reached - after trying - then it leaves open the alternative that many of us want: Medicare for All, ie. a single-payer system. The legislation will make health insurance less attainable and affordable for most entrepreneurs, particularly those with pre-existing conditions, by allowing states to opt out of numerous ACA's protections and coverage requirements.

"Today Republicans' core values were on full display, demonstrating the disgusting belief that only the rich are worthy of access to healthcare". The House approved the overall proposal on May 4, and since then Senate Republicans have set up a working group to dig into the bill and see if they can make changes to appease their moderate members enough to win approval.

The analysis also forecast that the House bill would have lowered the federal deficit during the decade by $337 billion, mainly by spending less on Medicaid and subsidies for most people buying health plans through the ACA marketplaces.

Not only is Manchin concerned about the cost, but about the millions of people in jeopardy of losing their health care coverage.

This is all taking place in the context of a world that has solved the health care morass for their citizens by taking the burden off the individual citizen with some version of single payer plans. More conservative Republicans, meanwhile, were frustrated that it didn't repeal the law in its entirety. While not ideal, our bill provides real solutions that will drive down costs, increase access and provide the quality of care for the people of Illinois' 18th. "Our people can not afford these premium increases".

Overall, 21% of voters supported Republicans' American Health Care Act while 56% opposed it, according to a Quinnipiac University national poll published Thursday. That's where health care costs could be lowered.

A survey of 1,000 people in the health care industry by NEJM Catalyst finds that the majority of respondents are "deeply concerned" about the quality of health care in the coming years.

Since the vote, there has been quite a bit of fearmongering and misinformation about this bill.
