Congress hopes JD (U) changes stance, supports Bihar's 'daughter' Meira Kumar

Nitish Kumar snubs Lalu Yadav's advice says

Nitish Kumar snubs Lalu Yadav's advice says"there'll be no change in stand will back Ram Nath Kovind in presidential poll

Earlier in the day, after reaching Patna from Delhi, Mr. Lalu told journalists that he did not know what had transpired between Mr. Nitish and the BJP that he had suddenly chose to support the latter's Presidential nominee. While Yadav chatted with state Congress President Ashok Choudhary on his left, Kumar kept talking to Vidhan Sabha Speaker Vijay Choudhary, seated to his right.

"I have a lot of respect for Meira Kumar, but "Bihar ki beti" has been nominated only to lose", Nitish told media.

RJD chief Lalu Prasad said that Mr Kovind was a hardcore RSS man and even if the "Congress had asked us to support him, I would have gone against it".

Expressing his confidence that Kovind would win the polls, PTI quoted Naidu saying, "Ram Nath Kovind will win with a huge majority, which is evident from the number of people who attended the event where he filed nomination".

"It's an election for the post of the president".

"It is a well thought out decision, and our sentiments are clear".

Paswan said it was only after Kovind's name came up as the NDA nominee that the opposition forwarded Meira Kumar's name.

"All the leaders have decided that we will support Ram Nath Kovind for the post of president". "There was a belief that Nitish Kumar would not jeopardize the government".

He said the JD (U) took the decision after considering all aspects and the election for the top office should not be a matter of confrontation.

Earlier in the day, Mr. Lalu had said he would request Mr. Nitish to amend his "historical blunder" of supporting the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) nominee for the Presidential poll. However, Congress did not agree to Gopal Krishna Gandhi's name. What made matters worse was the dilly-dallying by Congress in naming a candidate. CPI general secretary S Sudhakar Reddy is learnt to have said in the meeting that the Opposition should have met earlier and firmed up its candidate. "There is a feeling that some non-Congress contender should have been considered", the sources said. "But the question is has the "Bihar ki beti" been chosen as the opposition candidate, but she will lose", he told reporters here.
