The film made USD$100.5 million at the United States box office in its opening weekend, making it the highest-grossing opening weekend for a female-directed film (the title previously held by 50 Shades Of Grey, directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson).

Wonder Woman is about to land in the dark rooms of France and is already thinking about his next fighting. But a late marketing push, including 200 jam-packed advanced screenings on Wednesday evening, helped create the mostly positive buzz that carried the film throughout the weekend.

China was the top market with a $38.2 million opening, the fourth-highest in that country for Warner Bros. Its sequel, Age of Ultron, is second with the $191.3 it brought in in 2015. While it's not as big as the opening weekend for Man of Steelor Deadpool, it easily surpasses Doctor Strangeand the first Iron Man, Thor and Captain Americamovies.

Wonder Woman is being praised as one of the best superhero films ever by many critics and cinema goers as it conquered the box office this weekend. Starring Gal Gadot as the Amazonian warrior princess, Wonder Woman is the rare - and most successful - female-led film in an overwhelmingly male superhero landscape.

In case you're wondering, Spider-Man, the 2002 film that truly kick-started the modern boom of superhero films, grossed $114.8 million in its opening weekend.

Some still had issues with "Wonder Woman".

"It's the principle of the thing", the professor, Stephen Clark, told The Washington Post.

Stacy L. Smith, director of the Media, Diversity and Social Change Initiative at USC Annenberg, cited the initiative's three-year study that found female directors "face a steep fiscal cliff as they attempt to move from independent to more commercial filmmaking". And so, you know, there is always that opportunity in any movie with a metaphor to use to make something lovely that really touches people.

Wonder Woman is in theaters now!

Since its release on 1 June, Wonder Woman has raked in $100.5m (£78m) in the USA alone. "She's Wonder Woman. She's got to come to America".
