Five London Tower Blocks Evacuated Over Fire Safety Concerns

The announcement came as around 3,000 residents of the Chalcots Estate in Camden, north London, face weeks in temporary accommodation after four tower blocks were evacuated.

Camden Council said its sudden order Friday to remove residents from four of the five tower blocks on the Chalcots Estate was "essential" after the London Fire Brigade discovered problems with gas pipe insulation and other fire safety issues.

Around 600 residential blocks are in the process of being checked for combustible materials.

Celotex, which makes the RS5000 insulation boards in the tower's rainscreen cladding, insisted no building over 18m tall would be fitted with the material. Some refused to leave their high-rise apartments.

Some 4,000 people were evacuated from their homes on a north London estate with just minutes' notice Friday evening after fire chiefs told Camden Council it wasn't safe for them to stay.

Camden Council was reported early Saturday saying they had secured "hundreds of hotel beds for Chalcots' residents".

There are fears over the external cladding of the buildings evacuated, which was what saw Grenfell Tower burst into flames.

Camden Borough Council says in a statement Saturday that it housed numerous residents at two temporary shelters while many others were provided hotel rooms.

Following the tragic fire in Grenfell Tower, concerns have been raised across the borough over the fire safety of high-rise blocks.

Council leader Georgia Gould said the decision was made with the London Fire Brigade and local council experts unable to guarantee their safety. "Grenfell changed everything, and when told our blocks were unsafe to remain in, we acted".

Residents trooped out of the buildings with suitcases and plastic bags stuffed with clothes as council workers in high-visibility security vests guided them to a local community center, where some spent the night on inflatable beds packed into a gym. Others were being put up in hotels or other housing projects.

Several residents told Sky News they found out what was going on from watching the news channel.

For now, Roger Evans is not planning to leave his first-floor apartment in the Taplow block of the Chalcots Estate because "it was a knee jerk reaction by the council", he said. Residents fled their homes, then waited helpless in the streets for hours as friends, neighbours and children who went to school with their own burned to death.

"All I can say at the moment is they don't pass any of the safety tests".

Police said Friday they are considering filing manslaughter charges in the Grenfell disaster and they were conducting a wide-ranging investigation that will look at everything that contributed to it.

Detective Superintendent Fiona McCormack said insulation on the building, and the cladding panels, had failed safety tests carried out after the disaster.

"When we decide to clad the building we would have drawn up a specification, at the time we would have gone through planning and had a conversation with building control in terms of what we wanted to do and out usual precautions in fire and health and safety concerns".

Supporters of the principles-based approach say it avoids the emergence of loopholes and means companies have to take account of new information on risks immediately, rather than wait for a new regulation to be drafted. The fatal fire was started by a faulty Hotpoint fridge-freezer in one of the apartments, London police said on Friday.
