Cullen's fees will not be paid for with taxpayer dollars, according to Agen.

Uncomfortable personal attachments aside, this is not the first time high-profile clients have called upon Cullen while embroiled in political scandal.

While Pence is most likely in the margins of the FBI's investigation into the Trump campaign and administration, the presence of special counsel Robert Mueller means that Pence will nearly certainly be questioned by investigators and will therefore need legal advice on how to navigate his way through the various inquiries.

Mr Mueller is leading an Federal Bureau of Investigation inquiry into Russia's alleged meddling in the 2016 presidential election. Michael Flynn, Trump's former national security adviser, originally misled Pence about his contacts with Russian officials - incorrect claims that Pence himself then repeatedly publicly.

He represented high profile clients such as former United States congressman Tom DeLay and Elin Nordegren, ex-wife of golfer Tiger Woods. Paul Trible during the Iran-Contra investigation, and in the 1970s, he served during the Watergate investigation on the staff of Rep.

If the report is true and if it is confirmed that Trump obstructed justice by trying to get Comey, and perhaps others, to end the Russian Federation probe, that could lead to the President's impeachment by Congress, something that many Democratic lawmakers say they would pursue if circumstances warrant.

Several legal experts told Reuters that Comey's testimony last week that Trump expected loyalty and told Comey he hoped he could drop an investigation of a former top aide could bolster obstruction of justice allegations against Trump.

Mr Comey, who had been leading one of several Russian Federation inquiries, testified to Congress last week that the president had pressured him to drop the inquiry into Mr Flynn. Former national security adviser Michael Flynn was sacked after just 24 days for supposedly lying to Pence about discussing the easing of sanctions against Russia during meetings with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak. "I hope you can let this go".
