A 16-year-old runner who texted his mother that he was being chased by a bear as he competed in a popular race over mountainous terrain was killed on Sunday just south of Anchorage.

The teenager was a participant in the 29th annual Robert Spurr Memorial Hill Climb, race director Brad Precosky said.

While running, the teen got separated from the group and sent a text to his mother, who was also participating in the race, stating that he was being chased by a bear.

A number of the runners, who had finished the race once hearing the news, helped carry medical equipment onto the mountain for medical personnel.

The boy's remains were airlifted from the scene by the Alaskan Air National Guard, according to the Alaska Dispatch News.

The 250-pound black bear was shot in the face by park rangers, but it managed to run away.

State park staffers were scouring the area Monday looking for the bear, according to state Fish and Game spokesman Ken Marsh.

"This is the worst thing that could happen", Precosky said.

A black bear killed a 16-year-old runner in a mountain trial race near Anchorage, Alaska. One runner said he had seen a bear circling a teen.

"It did definitely take a slug strike to the face when the ranger fired on it".

A volunteer found Patrick's body but warned others to get back after the bear rushed from out of the bushes. Many reported seeing bears throughout the race, which includes a 3,400-foot vertical climb spanning three miles up Bird Ridge near Anchorage.

"This young man didn't do anything wrong", Crockett told ADN. He said Sunday's attack was believed to have been a rare predatory move, not a defensive action such as when a female bear will protect her cubs.
