Erin Hills played easier yesterday for a variety of reasons, but that doesn't mean it played easily.

Then there was the Par-5 18th hole. He set the target early under warm sunshine, and even as the wind tapered in the afternoon, no one could catch him.

Harman most recently won the Wells Fargo Championship last month by making a birdie putt on the final hole to avoid a playoff with Dustin Johnson - there's that name again - and Pat Perez.

Rickie Fowler, urged on by the biggest galleries at Erin Hills, turned in a scrappy outward nine mixing two birdies with a bogey to sit three back of the leader. Fowler shot a 73 and was still very much in the hunt at a second straight major.

You can watch coverage of the 117th U.S. Open on TV or online, but you should also follow the action with SN's live U.S. Open leaderboard and video highlights, with updates below. Only a half-dozen of them have even experienced Sunday contention in golf's biggest events.

But it was his tie for fourth in the 2014 U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2 that enabled him to get a PGA Tour card.

The top echelons of the leaderboard are dominated by a number of Americans, including four of the current top five, as the home golfers excel at Erin Hills.

Another eagle was available when Thomas drove the short, 288-yard par-4 15th hole. The USGA is providing complimentary bottled water the rest of the week.

McIlroy responded: "More like 200mil. not bad for a "bored" 28 year old. plenty more where that came from". For most others, it was being careless off the tee and facing the rigorous test of recovering.

His score in relation to par - 9 under - was a U.S. Open record, and he finished the day at 11 under.

"Did you hit it good?" asked Johnson. But then he three-putted from long range on the 13th and the 14th, and lost all hope when he missed the green on the 17th while going after the flag.

Furyk reached 10-under 200 with a 67 in the third round at Olympia Fields, giving him a three-shot lead over Stephen Leaney of Australia.

"I wouldn't have been able to do that without that rain last night", he said. "It was downwind to where I knew if I hit it solid, I could definitely get it there". "Chambers (Bay) was tough with the greens, and then previous year had a tough Sunday, and I thought that the USGA did a phenomenal job this week of allowing the golf course to be what it is and play the way it's supposed to play".

It's the most players tied after 36 holes of the US since 1974 at Winged Foot, only the names from 43 years ago resonate more than today - Raymond Floyd, Hale Irwin, Gary Player and Arnold Palmer.

"It's going to be a really cool day for someone tomorrow", Fowler said. But I couldn't have shot any higher.

In defence of the U.S. Golf Association, the wide-open course was designed and set up to be played in strong winds and with firm and fast fairways and greens. Two down, 14 to go.
