Then, in a subsequent interview on "Fox News Sunday", Sekulow sowed further confusion by saying Trump was under investigation - then denied he said anything of the sort.

The denial Sunday by Jay Sekulow, one of several personal lawyers Trump has hired to represent him in the Russian Federation case, is the latest of many examples in which the president's aides and lawyers have scrambled to avert a public-relations mess created by Trump's tweets, off-script remarks or leaked private conversations.

President Donald Trump kicked off the weekend with a tweet announcing, "I'm being investigated for firing the Federal Bureau of Investigation director by the man who told me to fire the Federal Bureau of Investigation director". That tweet was in response to a Washington Post story that ran with five unnamed sources - without identifying the agencies they represented - saying that the special council had brought down his investigation to include the president.

US President Donald Trump is not under any investigation for obstruction of justice in a probe into his possible collusion with Russian Federation, his attorney says.

"There is not an investigation of the President of the United States, period".

Sekulow told "Fox News Sunday" and three other shows that Trump's tweet was based exclusively on a Washington Post report, and he insisted Trump wasn't under investigation.

"They had the best M&Ms on the planet", Rubio said about his trip to Florida with Trump on Air Force One.

"I can't imagine a scenario where the president would not be aware of it", Sekulow said on CBS.

"Trump has a compulsion to counterattack".

Trump adviser Newt Gingrich said on ABC's "This Week" that the tweet Friday "didn't help him". "America is prepared to outstretch its hand and work with the people of Cuba, but we will not empower their oppressors", Rubio said in Miami. I really, truly believe that.

Friday is the deadline set by the House Intelligence Committee for the White House to produce "any White House recordings or memoranda of Comey's conversations with President Trump (that) now exist or have in the past". "The president is not under investigation". Angus King of ME, an independent who caucuses with the Democrats.

Himes says the notion the investigation has been going on too long "is just crazy" and "we're talking about the very core of our democracy here". This is a very complex matter, involving thousands of pages of intelligence documents, lots of witnesses.

"With all due respect to Mr. Sekulow, what he says about what Mr. Mueller is or isn't doing will make no difference", said Gregory B. Craig, who led the legal team defending President Bill Clinton against impeachment charges.

Yet Trump's tweets in recent days condemning the actions of his own Justice Department have reached an intense level, revealing the president's increasing agitation about the probe and the attention it has drawn. Last week he described the concerns about Russian influence in USA elections as a "phony" story.
