Since then it was made a decision to develop phase two in two stages: phase 2a - from the West Midlands to Crewe that was announced previous year; and phase 2b - from Crewe to Manchester and from the West Midlands to Leeds, South Yorkshire and the East Midlands.

The work is estimated to support 16,000 jobs.

Shares in the construction and support services group lost 70 per cent of their value last week after a shock profit warning sparked fears of an emergency cash raising.

The HS2 bid is underwritten by all three partners, and HS2 confirmed it sought extra commitment from the other two firms that they were still willing to go ahead on that basis.

Grimshaw's company worked with Dutch planners Royal Haskoning DHV and Phil Jones Associates to plan the cycleways linking London to Birmingham, and Leeds and Manchester.

A number of foreign firms were successful in bidding for the HS2 contracts, including Swedish-based Skanska, French company Bouygues Travaux and Austria's Strabag.

The official budget of the project is £55.7 billion, but so far only the first phase of construction contracts have been announced.

"Britain's new railway line will bring huge economic benefits across the country and help ensure this government delivers on its promise to spread wealth beyond London and the south-east", said transport secretary Chris Grayling.

But critics have warned that this will mean that homes on the new Shimmer housing estate in nearby Mexborough will be bulldozed.

The route is expected to become operational from 2026.

The route in South Yorkshire will be the route consulted in 2016 which in part follows the M1 and M18, serves Sheffield city centre via a spur from the HS2 line, and includes provision for a northern junction allowing trains to run between Sheffield and Leeds city centres using HS2.

The Transport Secretary will today publish a bill to deliver the next phase of HS2, from the West Midlands to the West Coast Main Line south of Crewe.

Joe Rukin, Stop HS2 campaign manager, said: "The cost of HS2 has already doubled once since it was first proposed so it should come as no surprise to anyone that it might double again".

Mr Grayling defended the cost of the project, insisting that "we are spending what it will take to deliver the best infrastructure in a way that is as sensitive as possible to the environment it's going through".

Locating the route through Long Eaton on a high-level viaduct through the town immediately adjacent to the existing low-level rail corridor. "Building HS2 will create vital new capacity on our rail lines, giving inter-city customers a faster and more reliable service and freeing up space on local lines, making everybody's journeys more comfortable and convenient".
