Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan yesterday urged all Muslims to visit and "protect" Jerusalem in the wake of violence over metal detectors that Israel installed and later removed from the Temple Mount.

Deadly unrest erupted in the days after the new measures were introduced, with clashes breaking out around the compound and in the occupied West Bank, leaving five Palestinians dead. The day had started with increased security measures.

Palestinians have finally ended their nearly 2-week boycott of prayers at al-Aqsa mosque.

Palestinian Muslims have been praying on the streets outside the mosque compound for the past week.

Israeli authorities said the measures, including metal detectors, were needed because the July 14 attackers smuggled guns into the compound and emerged from it to attack the officers.

"The Al Jazeera network does not stop inciting to violence on the Temple Mount issue", Netanyahu posted Wednesday in Hebrew on his Facebook page, referring to the Qatar-based network's coverage of recent unrest surrounding the Jerusalem site, the holiest in Judaism and the third holiest in Islam.

Palestinians claimed Israel was trying to expand its control over the site and refrained from entering the complex.

Newly installed railings and scaffolding where cameras were previously mounted were also cleared early on Thursday, after which Israeli police declared that all new security measures had been removed. Thousands of Muslim worshipers celebrated the victory and Jerusalem's senior Muslim clergies announced that Muslim worshipers can return to pray inside the mosque.

At least four other Palestinians have died in the past week in violent clashes with Israeli security forces amid protests over the Jerusalem site that is sacred to both Jews and Muslims. The removal of the railings was one of the demands raised by the Waqf، the Jordanian trust which manages Muslim sites on of Al Aqsa، to end the crisis.

"The prayers will happen, God willing, inside the al-Aqsa mosque", Abbas told a press conference on Thursday.

The announcement came after Israeli police said cameras that were installed at the site have been taken down, two days after metal detectors were also dismantled.

In an article on Wednesday, the conservative and typically pro-Netanyahu newspaper Israel Hayom described the prime minister's response to the shooting as "hasty and confused" and his back-tracking on the metal detectors as "feeble".

But, facing domestic outrage over the Israeli Embassy deaths, Jordan's King Abdullah excoriated Netanyahu for embracing the guard involved after demanding he return without being investigated. Jordan is the official custodian of Muslim holy sites in the Jerusalem.

The crowds grew larger overnight, with some holding up a large Palestinian flag outside Jerusalem's Old City.
