PC and mobile cross-platform play coming to Runescape

"The two titles will be the first mainstream and fully-established Western MMORPGs to deliver the complete MMO experience to PC and mobile platforms and feature full interoperable play, allowing players to jump from PC to mobile platforms and back again", says Jagex.

The same applies for the updated version, though we're not sure exactly when that will make an appearance. However, having a major desktop MMO incorporate cross-platform play for mobile devices is unprecedented, and will hopefully underline the benefits of such support to other developers behind games in the genre, as well as introducing a new generation of gamers to a beloved classic. You create a character, then head off on an epic adventure full of monster battling, gear crafting, and PvP.

Launched in 2001, RuneScape has been played by over 100 million players worldwide, making it the world's largest Free-to-play Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG), as recognized by the Guinness Book of Records. RuneScape, in both its modern and classic iterations, is coming to mobile. Players can use their existing accounts and play in the same servers that they use in the PC versions of the games. Jagex plans on releasing Old School RuneScape Mobile in winter 2017, and RuneScape Mobile not long afterward in 2018.

Just as well, Jagex has opened up beta registrations for both versions of the game. That's right, the same great RuneScape but now on your smartphone or tablet.

And now, a new generation of players will have a chance to experience RuneScape in an entirely different way.

Mobile gaming, where the 2012 release Clash of Clans still tops the charts, is ideal for RuneScape's future.

After being available in some form for more than 16 years, it's kind of fantastic that RuneScape hasn't had a mobile release yet.
