Qatar and Turkey refuse to close Turkish base as France offers to mediate Gulf crisis

A top Emirati diplomat has cautioned that a diplomatic standoff between Qatar and its Gulf neighbors could be prolonged.

The diplomatic slack now appears likely to be picked up again by the Europeans, with French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian heading to the region at the weekend.

In an interview with Al Jazeera, Samer Shehata of the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies, however, said that while France's voice lends more support for Qatar, it does "not have a tremendous amount" of influence in the crisis.

He said he would be meetng with Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Mohammed Zayed Al Nahyan and Saudi Arabia Crown Prince Mohammad Salman Abdulaziz Al Saud during his visit.

Le Drian is to travel on to Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the UAE, following a four-day mediation mission by US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson that made little progress in defusing mounting tensions in the Gulf.

But after the top USA diplomat left the region, the UAE state minister for foreign affairs went on a tweetstorm in Arabic, saying the rift is "far from a political solution" and that the countries face a "long estrangement".

Qatar is insisting on its position and there are no signs that Doha is backing off from its stance in the face of the four Arab states.

For his part, Sheikh Mohammed said that the actions taken by Saudi Arabia and its allies against Qatar are disrupting the regional effort to combat terrorism.

In defending its backing of the Brotherhood, Qatar argues that demonizing dissident groups risks driving them toward violent Islamic radicalism.

Stratfor said in an analysis last week, referring to the Gulf Cooperation Council. This was after United States president, Donald Trump completed a back to back meetings with the leaders of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), including the Emir of Qatar.

Qatar denies the charges of extremism and called the demands "unrealistic".

Al Jubeir stressed that there are basic principles that all countries, including Qatar, must abide by, including stopping support to terrorism.

.

The United States, a longtime ally of Sunni-ruled Saudi Arabia, has given mixed signals about its policy on the Gulf crisis.

"The nation of Qatar has, unfortunately, been a funder of terrorism, and at a very high level", Trump said.

The report appeared to have been published by Swiss website The Local claimed the nations, excluding Libya, had called for Qatar to be stripped of the tournament but this has been rejected by Federation Internationale de Football Association.

The quartet has said relations with Qatar would be restored only if it met the 13 demands presented to Doha on June 22.
