Roger Federer wins a record-breaking eighth Wimbledon title after a 6-3 6-1 6-4 victory over Marin Cilic on Sunday afternoon.

Five years after his last Wimbledon triumph, Roger Federer captured his record eighth All England Club title to become the tournament's oldest men's champion of the modern era. Federer registered a 6-3, 6-1, 6-4 win over Croatia's Marin Cilic in front of a packed crowd.

Federer won the first set by 6-3 as the Croatian showed some skills and tested him, but the Swiss star came back strongly in the second set and won it convincingly by 6-1. It's the first time Federer has won at Wimbledon without dropping a single set. He came within a point of beating Federer a year ago, and all things being equal, had a real shot of winning the match on Sunday.

Cilic, US Open champion in 2014, injured his left foot and cried during the second set.

After this match, he passed over Pete Sampras and William Renshaw, the two legends, who had the same number of titles like him.

The US Open starts 20 days after Federer turns 36, where he could continue his dominance into his late-30s at the stadium named after Arthur Ashe. Federer is 35 years old, and hasn't won a Wimbledon title since 2012.

This was his second Grand Slam this tennis season.

The finals meeting with Cilic completes a almost flawless run at Wimbledon.

"I gave my best that's all I could do", said a teary-eyed Cilic.

Federer added: "It's cruel sometimes but he fought well and he's a hero". "I can't really believe it yet". But he won the Australian Open this year for his 18th Grand Slam title.

Emotions ran high on Centre Court as Federer reflected on an injury-hit year and, after collecting the trophy to rapturous applause, the tearful Swiss reiterated his ambition to play at SW19 again.
