El Comandante del Ejército de Venezuela, Jesús Suárez Chourio, encabezó ayer un acto en el patio central del cuartel de la 41 brigada blindada de esa fuerza, en la ciudad de Valencia, a menos de 200 kilómetros al oeste de Caracas, para anunciar formalmente el fin de "un ataque terrorista, paramilitar, mercenario", como calificó a un intento de levantamiento armado en ese predio.

Una base al norte de Venezuela fue el blanco de un ataque este domingo.

En el grupo que huyó se encuentra otro teniente desertor que "está siendo buscado activamente", dijo Maduro, al señalar que también es protegido de los "terroristas".

"Un grupo de paramilitares que aprovechando las condiciones del momento nos asaltaron, pero inmediatamente fueron repelidos, fueron derrotados y estamos aquí festejando el triunfo de la patria en paz", añadió Suárez, que participó de la intentona golpista de 1992 junto al fallecido presidente Hugo Chávez, de quien fue su jefe de seguridad cuando llegó al poder.

El ataque a la unidad militar fue dado a conocer a través de un video en el que un grupo de unos 20 hombres vestidos de militares portando armas largas acompañan a un portavoz que se identifica como capitán Juan Caguaripano y comandante de la operación David Carabobo.

Una fuente militar indicó a Efe que al menos ocho de los 20 insurrectos habían sido detenidos y que ellos tres son oficiales de tropa, de bajo rango: un sargento de la reserva de paracaidistas, un teniente que desertó hace tres meses de la FANB, un miembro de la Milicia (civiles armados), y cinco son civiles. Esto de acuerdo con el comandante del ejercito.

Caguaripano, que se separó de la FANB en 2014 durante la ola de protestas antigubernamentales de entonces, dijo declararse "en rebeldía" contra "la tiranía asesina de Nicolás Maduro".
