Colorado politicians condemn 'domestic acts of terrorism' after violence in Charlottesville

These were white supremacists and this was domestic terrorism.

A Republican senator from Colorado, Cory Gardner, tweeted "Mr. President - we must call evil by its name".

We're watching how Donald Trump is using this platform of unfettered communication now that he's commander in chief.

While calling for restoring law and order, the president has not referred to the violent acts during the demonstration as terrorism.

One person was killed in that attack - and a total of 34 were injured in skirmishes in both locations, city officials said. Saturday's clashes between white nationalists and counter-protesters have grown so violent the governor has declared a state of emergency and police have ordered people to disperse.

He also did not label the later assault, which occurred when a car plowed into a crowd of protesters in the city's downtown area after police halted the rally.

Gardner's tweet came after President Trump blamed "many sides" for the violence in the Virginia college town. He also offered a call for unity among Americans of "all races, creeds and colors". Michael Bennet, took to Twitter to decry the attacks.

For context, keep in mind that these are not back-bench Republicans. "Everyone in leadership must speak out".

Our Founders fought a revolution for the idea that all men are created equal.

"We ALL must be united & condemn all that hate stands for", he wrote on his personal Twitter account. He added that he was "heartbroken to hear about loss of life in today's domestic terror attack".

His tweets have the power to shape international relations, send stock prices up - or down - and galvanize the American public.

U.S. Rep. Doug Lamborn, a Republican from Colorado Springs, and U.S. Rep. Ken Buck, a Republican from Windsor, did not issue comments on the violence. And, as much as possible, we'll relate what else was going on at the time.

Several hours earlier, prior to the report of the car into the crowd, Gardner also tweeted about the hatred shown had no place in our country.

Utah Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch wrote, "We should call evil by its name". He ignored questions from reporters asking if he condemns white supremacy. "He just said the nation should come together". Nothing specific against us.
