Augusta Chronicle sold to GateHouse Media

According to the Augusta Chronicle, the Morris Publishing Company sold its newspaper to GateHouse Media.

According to its website, Gatehouse publishes nine daily newspaper in Florida, including The Daytona-Beach News Journal, Gainesville Sun, Panama City News Herald, Northwest Florida Daily News, Ocala Star-Banner, Leesburg Daily Commercial, Lakeland Ledger, Winter Haven News Chief and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune.

The transaction is expected to close on October 2.

The other newspapers included in the sale are the St. Augustine Record, the Florida Times-Union, the Amarillo Globe-News, Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, The Topeka Capital-Journal, Log Cabin Democrat and Juneau Empire.

An article from The Augusta Chronicle states that the Morris family will continue to own the current Chronicle building and property in downtown Augusta and is looking at redevelopment.

"The family is now exploring options for development of the site for mixed use, including offices, a hotel or multifamily housing", the release said.

GateHouse Media owns more than 130 daily newspapers and more than 500 non-daily publications across the country.
