Giroud settles seven-goal thriller for Arsenal

Arsenal snapped up Alexandre Lacazette from Lyon for £54million this window

Arsene Wenger has confirmed that Friday night's match-winner Olivier Giroud has made a decision to stay at Arsenal next season, ending interest from Everton, West Ham United and Marseille.

Giroud proved to be the hero of the opening night of the 2017-18 Premier League season on Friday (11 August), demonstrating trademark strength to hold off centre-backs Harry Maguire and Wes Morgan to head home the winning goal in a thrilling 4-3 home defeat of plucky Leicester City.

The Frenchman brought on Olivier Giroud and Aaron Ramsey to improve the attack, and his decision was rewarded as the duo scored in the final ten minutes to bring home Arsenal's second opening day victory in eight seasons.

Alexandre Lacazette headed the Gunners ahead 94 seconds into his top-flight debut, only for Shinji Okazaki to nod in an equaliser just two minutes later.

Vardy's second goal, a towering header from a corner-kick, looked to have won it for the Foxes until the sensational finale that saw the game swing in Arsenal's favour.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was delighted with the former Montpellier man's impact, however, and offered Giroud a glowing post-match reference.

Giroud had been seriously considering his future following the £52 million club record signing of Alexandre Lacazette and Wenger's certainty but has been persuaded to stay in what is now a "super sub" role.

"It is fantastic", Wenger replied when asked about Giroud's willingness to fight for his place.

"I opened the door for him at some stage as I had many strikers and it's important for him to play but I don't want him to go". He doesn't want to leave and I'm happy that he wants to stay.

"With the first corner, we were late".

But Arsenal entered the match with a dismal record of one win, three losses and three draws in their last seven season openers.
