First lady Melania Trump tweeted "let's communicate w/o hate in our hearts".

And honestly speaking, if this doesn't bring us together - people from different nationalities, people from different ethnicities, different races, different ages, different denominations in church and racial beliefs and socioeconomic status - if this doesn't bring all of those groups together to stand up and stand united against hate, I honestly do not know what will. Someone has lost their life.

The remarks did draw some bipartisan unity, too.

A violent series of events surrounding a white nationalist rally turned deadly when a car plowed into a group of anti-racist marchers. He pointedly attacked Khizr Khan, the father of a Muslim U.S. soldier killed in Iraq in 2004, for his speech at the Democratic National Committee that challenged his understanding of the Constitution, suggested federal Judge Gonzalo P. Curiel was unable to be impartial because of his Mexican heritage and said in a CNN interview that then-Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly had "blood coming out of her wherever" after she questioned him at a debate.

"Hate and division must stop, and must stop right now".

"This is a devastating loss for their families, the Virginia State Police, and the entire commonwealth", McAuliffe said.

Hundreds had descended on the city either to march in or rail against a "Unite the Right Rally", a major gathering of white supremacists, nationalists and other supporters of the so-called "alt-right". Cory Gardner, a Colorado Republican, says that the president "must call evil by its name".

"It's been going on for a long time in our country", Mr Trump said.

HORSLEY: Attorney General Jeff Sessions also weighed in this afternoon, echoing the president's comments about the rule of law and condemning any message of hate and intolerance.

Trump walked out of the room.

"Deepest condolences to the families & fellow officers of the VA State Police who died today".

BELLAMY: Thank you. In all seriousness, thank you.

Several members of Congress urged the president to refer to violence in central Virginia with stronger language after the commander in chief decried the egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence. What is your reaction.

US President Donald Trump condemned the violence via Twitter. Police report that three people were arrested in relation to the rally.

He added: "It's not a group I want to energize, and if they are energized, I want to look into it and find out why". The USTR, first, has to decide whether an investigation is warranted.

BELLAMY:.Statue issue. This is white supremacy.

Cullen, 48, graduated from the Virginia State Police Academy in 1994 as a member of the 90th Basic Session. Just last night, President Trump spoke with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Trump is very eager to have China take a harder line with North Korea over its nuclear program.

"We had folks who came here to cause mayhem and chaos and mischief that resulted in three fatalities here in the city of Charlottesville", city manager Maurice Jones said at a news conference.
