Not surprising if North Korea tests missile again - Central Intelligence Agency chief

North Korea, according to the director, has been moving at an "ever alarming rate" to develop nuclear-tipped ballistic missiles.

North Korea said on Thursday that plans would be completed by mid-August to fire four intermediate-range missiles to land near the U.S. Pacific island of Guam, 3,500 km (2,175 miles) away.

CIA Director Mike Pompeo on Sunday defended President Trump's tough rhetoric toward North Korea and praised the administration for "uniting the world" in trying to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula while making clear there is no intelligence that shows a nuclear war is "imminent".

"He conducted two in July, so it wouldn't surprise me if there was another missile test", Pompeo said to Fox News on Sunday.

Asked if that meant that he does not expect any future missile tests, Pompeo said he is "quite confident" that North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un "will continue to try to develop a missile program, so it wouldn't surprise me if there was another missile test".

Trump wrote on Twitter on Friday that U.S.

"He's pretty isolated today for the first time", he said.

Pompeo said, "From an intelligence perspective we have watched in my seven months in office a continued deterioration".

"He responds to adverse circumstances", he said. "The intelligence makes very clear that the Maduro regime continues to put snipers in towers and do things that are disgusting, repressive and the American policy is to work with our Latin American partners to try and restore democracy".

President Donald Trump has offered fiery warnings for North Korea, saying that the US military was "locked and loaded".

White House officials have insisted the investigation is not created to apply additional pressure on China as it relates to North Korea despite the president's previous remarks that he would be more amenable on trade if China stopped Pyongyang's nuclear program.

Trump has pushed China to pressure North Korea to halt a nuclear weapons program that is nearing the capability of targeting the United States.

The White House said in a statement that Trump and Xi "agreed North Korea must stop its provocative and escalatory behavior".

The North then came out with a threat to lob four intermediate-range "Hwasong-12" missiles near Guam, a tiny US territory some 2,000 miles (3,200 kilometers) from the North's capital, Pyongyang. "There's no intelligence indicating we're on the cusp of a nuclear war".
