Paramount Studios and Universal Pictures are now in a bidding war for the rights to the upcoming book Leonardo Da Vinci by Walter Isaacson.

Oscar-winning actor Leonardo DiCaprio is all set to portray the leading artist and intellectual of the Italian Renaissance Leonardo da Vinci in an upcoming biopic.

Born in 1452 and died in 1519, da Vinci is known for painting the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper.

The Oscar victor will portray the painter, widely considered one of the greatest artists of all time, in a new movie based on Walter Isaacson's book about the man. Paramount, where Appian Way's DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson have their first-look deal, was all over this one quickly, but Universal has come on gangbusters and turned it into a real two-studio race. Most recently, his 2007 book "Einstein: His Life and Universe" was adapted into National Geographic's "Genius", starring Geoffrey Rush as Einstein.

He has been named after Da Vinci, which is why he wished to play this character.

The book also reveals Da Vinci to be an easily distracted illegitimate child, who was also left-handed, gay, and a vegetarian to boot. The story goes that Leo's mother was looking at a Leonardo da Vinci painting in a museum in Italy when she first felt him kicked. His last film The Revenant showed him in the role of frontiersman Hugh Glass, which earned him his first best actor Oscar.

Paramount is hoping to convince DiCaprio to star in The Devil in the White City, an adaptation of another hit book by author Erik Larsen.
