Trump promises North Korea "fire and fury"

With US President Donald Trump employing harsh warnings similar to the North's rhetoric and the North responding with a more direct threat of attack on the US' territory, concern is growing in South Korea that the war of words between the two rather temperamental leaders could evolve into a real military conflict.

"I also want to remind national media that Guam is American soil and we have 200,000 Americans in Guam and the Marianas".

Financial markets have tended to quickly shake off North Korea's periodic saber-rattling in the past, dismissing it as bluster, but tensions have lingered this year amid signs that it is making progress in its ballistic missile program and on Trump's growing frustration with Pyongyang.

The test drew a new set of harsh economic sanctions from the U.N. Security Council over the weekend.

And a CBS News poll released Tuesday showed that 61% of Americans were uneasy about Trump's ability to handle the situation with North Korea.

"The president's latest threat of 'fire, fury and frankly power, the likes of which this world has never seen before, ' is clearly a reference to the use of nuclear weapons", said Jon Rainwater, executive director of Peace Action.

Pyongyang says its intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) are a legitimate means of defence against perceived United States hostility.

The statement says the move is in response to a recent U.S. ICBM test.

"Trump said the US would take tough measures if North Korea fired off missiles, but it did not", said Zhang Liangui, a professor at the ruling Communist Party's main training academy. And it marks a stark acceleration from 1994 to 2008, when North Korea did a total of 16 missile tests, Cha said.

THAAD is a land-based element that can shoot down a ballistic missile inside and just outside the atmosphere and would be the frontline weapon in meeting any North Korean strike.

Specifically, the statement mentioned a potential strike on Andersen Air Force Base designed "to send a serious warning signal to the U.S.". "Neither shall we flinch even an inch from the road to bolstering up the nuclear forces chosen by ourselves, unless the hostile policy and nuclear threat of the USA against the DPRK are fundamentally eliminated". Wednesday marked the 72nd anniversary of the atomic bombing of the city of Nagasaki by the US.

Tensions in the region have risen since North Korea carried out two nuclear bomb tests a year ago and two ICBM tests last month.

While Trump was celebrating his administration's work, Nikki Haley, the United States envoy to the United Nations who piloted the sanctions through the Security Council, admitted that there are questions about the effectiveness of the sanctions and an approach that despite Trump's claims does not markedly differ from that of previous administrations.

This is not a consensus view from the entire intelligence community, one USA official said.

The statement, from a spokesman from the Strategic Force of the Korean People's Army, warned that recent United States military maneuvers - a reference to the flight of two US B1B bombers over the Korean peninsula Monday - "may provoke a risky conflict".

A potential conflict between North Korea and the United States isn't the only military threat hanging over China's head.

Trump's motive for retweeting the Fox News story remains unclear but the decision to promote a report that - according to the USA ambassador to the United Nations - contains classified information leaked to the press by anonymous sources comes just days after the President praised Attorney General Jeff Sessions' plan to combat that very practice in the name of national security.

"It strikes me as an amateurish reflection of a belief that we should give as we get rhetorically".
