He also said his previous promise of "fire and fury" in response to threats from North Korea may have not gone far enough, vowing "trouble" for the country if its actions don't change.

History has demonstrated that China will not sit out a war in the Korean peninsula, and USA allies South Korea and Japan will bear the brunt.

The paper adds if North Korea "launches missiles that threaten USA soil first and the US retaliates, China will stay neutral".

Washington and Seoul say they're meant as a deterrent against North Korean aggression.

Relations between Washington and Pyongyang have been tense for months, in the wake of the North's repeated missile tests, including two successful intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) test launches in July.

The regime was further angered by last week's United Nations decision to increase economic sanctions against it.

According to the Chinese foreign ministry, Mr Trump told Mr Xi over the phone that he "fully understands China's role in the nuclear issue in the Korean Peninsula".

Beijing has warned both sides against actions that raise tensions on the Korean peninsula.

In another statement, the White House said Trump spoke with Guam Governor EddieCalvo.

"The relationship between the two Presidents is an extremely close one, and will hopefully lead to a peaceful resolution of the North Korea problem", it said.

Trump also told China to step up and do more to pressure North Korea into ending its nuclear weapons program.

Mr Trump had earlier brandished a threat of unleashing "fire and fury" on Pyongyang, then noted Thursday maybe that statement "wasn't tough enough".

President Donald Trump has once again doubled down on his warning against North Korea.

THE Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) allayed fears over the possible impact of North Korea's plan to launch ballistic missiles at the US Pacific territory of Guam on Manila, which is some 1,500 miles away.

President Donald Trump has refused to back down from his threats on North Korea, despite criticisms that he was needlessly and dangerously escalating tensions in region. No, that's not a dare, as you say. Pacific territory of Guam. Guam Gov. Eddie Baza Calvo says he coordinates with Homeland Security and the USA military on preparedness procedures.

Relations between Washington and Pyongyang have been tense for months, in the wake of the North's repeated missile tests, including two successful intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) test launches in July that brought much of the United States mainland within range.

Russian Federation and Germany have also urged both sides to tone down the rhetoric.
