Greinke's gem too much for the Giants — Arizona Diamondbacks

The Giants have dropped four straight, seven of their last eight and 15 of their last 20.

Calixte started Friday's game against the Diamondbacks and batted eighth, but will be replaced by Denard Span, who will bat leadoff. "He's too important to do that". Left-hander Robbie Ray notched his 14th win in a 3-2 triumph Friday night, after which right-hander Zack Greinke picked up his 17th victory in Saturday's triumph. "This year just hasn't worked out for us".

Regardless of whether he plays again or not, it's been an interesting season for the 30-year-old backup.

Greinke doubled with one out in the inning and tried to take third on David Peralta's ground ball to the left side of the infield. "There were a couple balls hit pretty well that we barely ran down".

Madison Bumgarner allowed two earned runs while scattering seven hits with a walk and six strikeouts over seven innings in a loss against the Diamondbacks on Saturday. After a pitch-around walk to Joe Panik, Greinke struck out Jarrett Parker.

"When Greinke is on and hitting the edges, he's real tough", Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. You look at how they're dealing.

Hernandez didn't exactly have a breakout second half, and he hasn't hit a home run all season. A team with a fully functional Bumgarner, Crawford and Buster Posey already has a fantastic head start.

Ray and Greinke are also now the second duo in the majors to each reach 200. The first ended with a feet-first slide into second. The Diamondbacks won 2-0, leaving the Dodgers' magic number to clinch the National League West at five.

He seemed more excited about his hits against Bumgarner than anything he did on the mound, or on the bases.

"He's got a couple homers on me", said Greinke, who has given up just three home runs to pitchers in his career, two to Bumgarner. "My swing has felt good in (batting practice) lately". Joe Panik and Pence hit back-to-back doubles in the first inning.

He left the field to a standing ovation.

"That was the key to the game", Lovullo said of the home run. "You don't know how many you're going to get against Madison Bumgarner". "Nothing Goldy does surprised me", Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo gushed after the game. He's a special player. "He does special things at special times".

Greinke has had a very good year overall but has saved a lot for the final weeks.

Although there is no questioning his effort, Pence has not been the right-handed lineup presence and defensive asset that the Giants had come to rely upon in a pair of World Series-winning seasons. Samardzija scored when Ray fumbled the feed from first baseman Paul Goldschmidt. Only Colorado Rockies RF Carlos Gonzalez (19) has more. Bumgarner has given up seven home runs in his last four starts. The Giants' two hits matched a season low. And no matter whom the Giants acquire to play center, they'll need a competent defensive backup at the position. He also speared a sharp one-hopper and flipped to start a double play. The Giants celebrated Hall of Famer 1B Orlando Cepeda's 80th birthday before the game. Giants greats CF Willie Mays, 1B Willie McCovey and RHP Gaylord Perry were on hand for the on-field festivities.
