The North/South joint venture with South Korea was suspended last year to punish the Kim Jong Un government for conducting nuclear and missile tests, and to cut off a possible source of funding for Pyongyang's illicit weapons development program.

Speaking to Russia's state-run TASS news agency, North Korean foreign minister Ri Yong Ho said his country's nuclear program guaranteed peace and safety in the region and would not be a matter of discussion. Ri added that North Korea's "army and people are persistently demanding to settle the final score with the Americans with a fiery hail, not words".

The newspaper described Gates as expressing profound concern during a speech relayed live at an International Bar Association conference in Sydney, citing Trump's tweets about North Korean leader Kim Jong-un as becoming excessively inflammatory.

On Monday, Trump's Defense Secretary James Mattis said at the annual meeting of the Association of the United States Army that the U.S. Army should "be ready" for a potential war with North Korea.

A spokesman for the South's Joint Chiefs of Staff said its military was closely monitoring the movements of the North Korean army and maintaining full readiness.

"The U.S. continues to kick up the racket of frantic nuclear war drills even though the situation on the Korean peninsula is on the verge of the outbreak of a worldwide thermonuclear war", the commentary read. A South Korean lawmaker said Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2017, that North Korean hackers may have stolen highly classified military documents that include U.S. -South Korean wartime "decapitation strike" plans against the North, according to South Korean media reports. Japan's air force also joined the drill. "And I listen to everybody, but ultimately my attitude is the one that matters, isn't it?"

The US military statement said the exercise "demonstrates how U.S. military forces in the Indo-Asia-Pacific are always ready to defend the American homeland and how the U.S. stands resolutely with Japan and the ROK to honor their unshakeable alliance commitments". They believe that the outcome of this is that Mideast politics cannot permit Iran to be the sole regional possessor of nuclear weapons. "And ultimately, I will do what's right for the United States and, really, what's right for the world". Days later, Ri claimed the threats amounted to a "declaration of war" against Kim's regime.

There were 47,000 cyber-incidents in the last 12 months, a 15 percent increase from the previous year, Minister for Cyber Security Dan Tehan said in Canberra as he launched a report by the Cyber Security Centre The defence contractor was exploited via an internet-facing server, with the cyber-criminals using remote administrative access to remain in its network, the report said.
