The fourth round of negotiations for the North American Free Trade agreement is underway, and American, Mexican, and Canadian negotiators are entering some of the more hard subject matter. Meanwhile, Trump ally Newt Gingrich was advising observers to ignore the bluster and expect the pact's salvation.

Trudeau heads Thursday to Mexico for his first official visit to the country and his sit-down with President Enrique Pena Nieto comes as officials in that country appear to be preparing for the deal to collapse.

"Putting progressive elements into trade deals - labour protections, environmental protections - actually helps us make the case for trade and reassure people that the benefits of trade will be distributed more fairly and not just to the small number of people who've always benefited from it in the past". "It's possible we won't be able to reach a deal with one or the other, but in the meantime we'll make a deal with one". "But I've been opposed of NAFTA for a long time in terms of the fairness of NAFTA".

U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to scrap it, as the fourth round of those talks got underway Wednesday. Trudeau, for his own part, cautioned against speculation and emphasized the prospects for an agreement.

"So saying, I think it's been clear that circumstances are often challenging, and we have to be ready for anything - and we are".

Trump and Trudeau met as negotiators from the three NAFTA countries gathered in the Washington suburb of Arlington to get the next round of trade talks under way. "My optimism is based on the fact I know how good it has been". While campaigning for office, Trump criticized the agreement as "the worst trade deal" signed by the US and blamed it for lost manufacturing jobs. It's been meeting with members of the Trump administration and lawmakers from states where vehicle manufacturers have a large presence as well as holding "extensive briefings" with Republicans and Democrats on Senate Finance and House Ways and Means committees, he said.

The other night, on October 10, Trudeau attended a gala in Washington DC, where, of course, the president's daughter, Ivanka Trump joined him. "Starting to play with a non-market economy would be awful for us".

Brady cited expanded market access for USA dairy farmers, stronger intellectual property protection and customs barriers as key to reaching a deal. He said the likelihood of passing a deal would drop after the so-called fast-track authority expires in July.

Meanwhile, U.S. corporate leaders are becoming increasingly alarmed by the Trump administration's protectionist demands and threats to withdraw from the pact.

Terminating the deal is one option he alluded to, and in the past Trump's said doing so would allow something completely new to be written. He says Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue literally saved NAFTA back in April during discussions with the President. "They are overproducing, creating depressing world prices for milk solids", Perdue told FOX Business' Trish Regan on The Intelligence Report.

Harper, whose Conservatives governed Canada from 2006 to 2015, warned that companies should be studying the consequences if the deal collapses. "And there are many people that agree with me", he said.
