Apple reveals the most popular iPhone apps of 2017

In iBooks, top fiction choices included "The Handmaid's Tale" and "Big Little Lies", and "Before We Were Yours".

Apple has revealed the year's best apps, media, and music that its users purchased from iTunes and App Stores this year.

Recode reported that the company increased its political lobbying effort earlier this year with a view to drawing political attention to what it argues are discriminatory measures.

Computer science was a huge area of interest in 2017, with the top three courses on iTunes U focusing on learning to code and developing apps with Swift.

Last year's app of the year winner was Prisma, which transforms ordinary iPhone photos into artwork in the style of the masters of the art world. The passing year saw a rise in real-time competitive gaming, apps focused on mental health and mindfulness, and apps transforming storytelling and reading.

This news comes days after Spotify named the "Castle on the Hill" singer its most popular artist of the year. Photo-editing app Affinity Photo was Apple's top iPad app of the year and puzzler The Witness was the No. 1 iPad game. Super Mario Run and Facetune were the most downloaded free and paid apps on the App Store in 2017. Singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran also received good news that his song, "Shape of You", was Apple Music's most downloaded song of the year.

In games, Splitter Critters, a cute $2.99 racing project, got the nod for iPhone games, with The Witness ($9.99) puzzle game for iPad as the favorite.

"Hillbilly Elegy" topped the nonfiction charts, leading a wave of titles on current events and politics. Apple features augmented reality, online realtime mobile games, environmentally-minded apps for sustainable living, and apps to help with parenting.

The company determines its top apps on a per-country basis and picked different ones in other countries.

Apple's editors also announced their picks for the best apps of the year.
