James Comey responds to critics like President Trump in live interview

Comey takes a swipe at Trump in plug for new book

Trump fired Comey last year amid the FBI's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

The White House and Republican National Committee have launched a widespread campaign to undermine Comey's credibility as he conducts a media blitz to promote his book, "A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies, and Leadership", which is set to be released Tuesday.

Hours before the interview aired, the president went on the offensive, accusing Mr Comey of "many lies".

Mr Comey told ABC's 20/20 programme on Sunday night: "I don't buy this stuff about him being mentally incompetent or early stages of dementia".

"I don't think he's medically unfit to be president".

He also describes the president as shorter than he expected, his tie was "too long", and he had "bright white half-moons under his eyes" that Comey says he believes came from tanning goggles.

That damning account has infuriated the president at a moment of intensifying legal pressure on other fronts. But, most importantly, the president of the United States is calling for the imprisonment of a private citizen, as he's done for a whole lot of people who criticize him.

"Ok everybody! Remember, the ultimate goal here is to take down the president!"

On Monday, Trump pulled the plug on sanctions aimed at Russian companies behind the equipment related to Syrian President Bashar Assad's alleged chemical weapons attack, after the sanctions were announced Sunday by Nikki Haley, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. That nearly tripled what ABC had a week before in the time slot. There's a danger that we will become numb to it and we will stop noticing the threats to our norms.

In his book, Comey likens Trump to a dishonest, ego-driven mob boss and says he demanded the then FBI chief's personal pledge of loyalty.

"A person who sees moral equivalence in Charlottesville, who talks about and treats women like they're pieces of meat, who lies constantly about matters big and small and insists the American people believe it - that person's not fit to be president of the United States, on moral grounds", Comey said. The president brought up the allegation multiple times, Comey writes, including an unprompted denial: "I'm a germaphobe". After Clinton's loss, many Democrats blamed Comey, and Clinton herself has said it hurt her election prospects. Ryan merely articulated what "reporters", and I use that term very loosely, nuance every day in those White House briefings. The move led the Justice Department to appoint Robert Mueller as special counsel to oversee the investigation, which Trump has denounced as a "witch hunt". We fight like crazy in this country about guns and about social issues and taxes and immigration. Oops! That disclosure became one of the top 100 reasons Clinton claims she lost the election. That is the core of this country.
